33 OEC Action Fund Endorsed Candidates Advance to the General Election
Columbus, OH — The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) Action Fund is thrilled to announce the successful advancement of 33 endorsed candidates through the May 5th Primary Election. These victories reflect the growing resolve of Ohioans to elect leaders who will fight for clean air, safe water, and abundant public lands.
“Ohioans are tired of paying higher energy bills while polluters get a pass. Ohioans are tired of our clean water being used as a bargaining chip. Ohioans made their voices heard on Tuesday, advancing 33 environmental champions through their primaries,” said Spencer Dirrig, Vice President of Government Affairs for the OEC Action Fund. “Our endorsed candidates are running on common sense solutions to the issues facing Ohio families. These candidates will fight to lower energy bills, protect clean drinking water, and oppose degradation of our public lands. Ohio is at a crossroads, and we are proud of these victories and excited to finish the job in November.”
In Richland County, voters narrowly voted to maintain the county’s ban on large scale solar and wind projects. The referendum was a result of a strong grassroots community effort to oppose government bans on solar and protect property rights for farmers in Richland County. While the outcome was not what we had hoped, the close margin signals a significant shift in how communities are thinking about energy. Despite opposition from the local Republican Party, more than 45% of Richland County voters chose to support solar–and that matters.
The results reflect growing bipartisan recognition that Ohio needs more energy generation to meet demand and keep costs down. It also makes clear that blanket bans are not a settled issue, and many Ohioans want the freedom to pursue new economic opportunities through clean energy.
