OEC Action Fund Celebrates Passage of Columbus City Schools Climate Resolution
Columbus, OH – In a historic move benefiting the Central Ohio community, the Columbus City School Board voted in favor of a resolution recognizing the impacts of climate change and a commitment to achieve a carbon-free district by 2050, with 100% clean, renewable energy usage in all of its facilities by 2050.
This decision marks a significant win for those advocating for sustainability, health, and safety within our school system.
Safe Green Schools, a coalition of parents and students, celebrates the Columbus School Board for acknowledging the urgent threat of climate change and its potential impact on students’ well-being and quality of education. The vote reflects a shared commitment to building a more resilient and environmentally conscious educational system.
The following quote can be attributed, in whole or in part, to Nolan Rutschilling, Managing Director of Energy Policy for the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) Action Fund:
“This decision is a step forward in the district’s efforts to address the real threat of climate change, and to build a strong partnership with the City of Columbus to ensure the community can reach its Climate Action Plan goals.”
“The timing is ripe for CCS to make these commitments as they develop their Facilities Master Plan. This plan should reflect our communities’ evolving needs, offering an opportunity to create healthy, sustainable schools while achieving cost savings.
“In particular, OEC Action Fund applauds Board Members Sarah Ingles and Jennifer Adair for their tireless efforts and leadership in driving this resolution across the finish line. Their unwavering dedication has been key in ensuring that this vital step toward safer, greener schools has become a reality. Their commitment to this cause has been a beacon for all those fighting for a sustainable and healthy future for our children.
“While this is a promising first step, efforts must continue to turn this vision into a fully realized policy. The district must integrate sustainability into all future planning and actively seek resources to advance these initiatives.”
