OEC Action Fund Statement on New Congressional Maps
Columbus, OH — Today, the Ohio Redistricting Commission unanimously passed a new Congressional map for Ohio, which will be in effect through the 2030 elections. The map received unanimous support from the 5 Republicans and 2 Democratic members of the Commission.
The following quote can be attributed, in whole or in part, to Spencer Dirrig, Vice President of Government Affairs for the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) Action Fund:
“Let’s be clear: the map passed by the Ohio Redistricting Commission is an unconstitutional gerrymander. This map fails to reflect the partisan makeup of the State of Ohio accurately, and, as a result, silences millions of Ohio voters. Unfortunately, this unconstitutional map was an inevitability due to a broken system. As long as politicians are empowered to choose their voters, we will not have fair and representative maps.
“While opponents used misinformation to confuse voters during the 2024 redistricting amendment campaign, we know that the vast majority of Ohioans want fair and representative maps that empower voters—not entrenched partisan interests. Although this map falls short of what the OEC Action Fund and Ohioans demand, we know that the future of our democracy depends on a reformed redistricting system that removes the power to create maps entirely from politicians. We look forward to continuing to pursue a process that will deliver the fair and representative maps Ohioans deserve.”
