OEC Action Fund Condemns Passage of SJR 2, Endorses Campaign To Protect Ohio Ballot Measures and Majority Rule

COLUMBUS — The OEC Action Fund unequivocally endorses the Protect One Person One Vote coalition’s campaign. The coalition launched today after the Ohio General Assembly passed SJR 2, a measure that the OEC Action Fund continuously opposed. The campaign — which represents millions of Ohio voters — will urge voters to oppose the amendment, which destroys the principle of “one person one vote” and empowers special interests over the people.

This proposed amendment shreds our Constitution, ending majority rule in Ohio and taking away the people’s right to decide what happens here. It undermines the sacred principle of “one person, one vote.” We need to protect our freedom to determine our future in Ohio, not permanently change our constitution to give up our rights.

“Ohioans will not be deceived by the shameless tactics employed by the Ohio General Assembly to undermine the will of the people. SJR 2 exists because some politicians believe they know better than the people of Ohio,” Chris Tavenor, managing director of democracy policy for the OEC Action Fund, said. “But for over a century, Ohioans have utilized the ballot initiative process to check the power of the legislature. Ohioans will not be deceived — they will vote no in August, protecting their right to direct democracy.”

The OEC Action Fund will support the efforts of the Protect One Person One Vote campaign, activating the environmental community across Ohio to Vote No in August.

“There is no environmental justice without democracy. SJR 2 is a direct attack on the right of Ohioans to hold politicians accountable to the will of the people. The OEC Action Fund proudly stands in opposition to this proposed constitutional amendment that jeopardizes Ohio’s environmental and democratic future,” Spencer Dirrig, director of the OEC Action Fund, said. “With our partners across Ohio, the OEC Action Fund will ensure the overwhelming voice of Ohio voters rejects this terrible power grab.”
