One year ago, insurrectionists directly assaulted our democratic institutions in Washington D.C. The attack demonstrated the necessity of continually advocating for a healthy democracy and, in turn, the environmental values we all cherish.
Following last year’s attack, the OEC Action Fund’s sibling organization, the OEC emphasized the need for action and accountability. As we enter 2022, we reaffirm that call to action.
The future of our country depends on a collective recommitment to the fundamental democratic ideals of our nation.
Many still don’t have basic democratic protections. At the Ohio Statehouse, legislators passed gerrymandered maps designed to disproportionately enshrine the power of one political party over another. And in Congress, we still haven’t seen the passage of laws, like the Freedom to Vote Act, that would shore up everyone’s right to vote.
This January 6, 2022, communities across Ohio are coming together for peaceful candlelight vigils and community events, all designed to emphasize one critical message: We must protect democracy. We must protect voting rights. We must demand legislators in Congress and in the Ohio Statehouse pass legislation necessary to do so.

January 6, 2021 will be a day long remembered in the United States. It is a reminder of what threatens our democracy and why we must all stand together and fight for the future of our country and the future of our planet.
We must hold accountable the individuals and leaders actively undermining the future the overwhelming majority of Americans voted for.
2022 must be the year where we strengthen our democratic institutions. We look forward to it.
